Introduction to Mahjong
Mahjong is a beautiful and intricate game of Chinese origin involving sets of tiles. The aim of the game is to form complete suits, usually suits of three, from between 13 to 16 tiles. The winner is the first player to have built all complete suits, with the winning tile ending the game with a set of 14 to 17 tiles.
Some believe that Mahjong was inspired by Confucius, while others believe that it arose during the time of the Chinese dynasties. Irrespective of its roots, Mahjong has always held an aura of mystery and intrigue, especially for Western players who ‘discovered’ the game in the 1920s. Since that period, Mahjong has experienced bouts of popularity, with the most recent revival in the online form.
Our next post will be more details on the history of Mahjong and how to play.
